The purpose of a SIL Assessment (or determination) study is to establish the level of risk reduction required for a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) to reduce risks from identified process hazards (including explosion, toxic exposure, loss of containment, etc.) to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP). The functional output of a SIL Assessment study is to assign each Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) a performance target or Safety Integrity Level (SIL) which can then dictate the design of the SIF to be installed with regards to its reliability.
This SIL determination study will serve as a basis of the design and specification of all SIS and associatedSIF. Design of the SIS and associated SIF for the assigned SIL levels will be confirmed through SIL verification study in compliance with IEC 61511/61508.
